ITU hosted the 3rd Mediterranean Geosciences Union (MedGU) for 2023. The symposium, dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Aral Okay, who recently passed away, brought together 400 scientists from 91 countries. MedGU is intended to create impact such as preserving the natural environment, developing policies towards earth sciences and creating sustainable societies in countries bordering the Mediterranean. MedGU, which organized its first symposium at ITU in 2021, held its second meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco in 2022.
MedGU-23 Symposium was held at Ayazağa Campus Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center on 26-30 November 2023, under the coordination of ITU Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences.
At the symposium dedicated to Prof. Dr. Aral Okay, retired faculty member of ITU Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences, who passed away on November 12, approximately 300 presentations on 17 topics were made. There was also a special session on the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
The symposium, where many issues in the fields of earth sciences, atmospheric sciences and environmental sciences were discussed, ended with the award ceremony and dinner.
After the symposium, the results of which will be presented to the scientific world in four proceeding books, some of the participants participated in a technical trip to examine the North Anatolian Fault and Cappadocia Volcanism.
A group of participants also attended the course entitled "Deepwater sedimentary systems: an overview" given by Prof. Dr. Dorrik Stow.
